A striking antique Art Nouveau hotel bell associated with Hôtel Mell in Le Portel, France, dating to the Belle Époque / early 20th-century aesthetic.
The bell is exceptionally decorative, with large luminous mother of pearl panels set within elaborate metal mounts. Applied botanical ornament, scrolling openwork and finely detailed borders surround the shell, while a broad domed bell top and pale stone base complete the unusual architectural form.
Originally intended for use in a hotel or reception setting, this is now a wonderful decorative object with both hospitality and French coastal history. Its sculptural silhouette and combination of pearlescent shell, aged metal and organic ornament are characteristic of the decorative tastes surrounding the Art Nouveau period.
A particularly distinctive piece for an antique desk collection, hotel memorabilia collection, curiosity cabinet or layered interior.
