A remarkable 18th-century French Gothic grotesque architectural fragment, carved in stone in the form of a powerful lion head. Originally associated with ecclesiastical architecture, the sculpture has the dramatic presence and weathered surface expected of an antique church fragment.
The lion is depicted frontally with an expressive face, pronounced brow, broad muzzle and deeply carved flowing mane. Large paws frame the lower portion of the composition, while the projecting architectural form above the head gives the piece its distinctive sculptural silhouette.
Grotesque animal imagery has a long history within Gothic ecclesiastical architecture, where fantastical creatures, animals and expressive heads became part of the sculptural vocabulary of churches and cathedrals. This fragment captures that tradition beautifully, combining the recognizable form of a lion with the exaggerated character associated with Gothic grotesques.
Centuries of exposure have created a particularly compelling surface: warm chalky stone, softened carving, darkened recesses, small losses and uneven coloration all contribute to its wonderfully ancient appearance. At over 3 kg / nearly 7 lb, it has considerable physical presence despite its relatively compact proportions.
An exceptional object for a collector of French architectural salvage, ecclesiastical antiques, Gothic sculpture or historic stonework. It would be striking displayed on a pedestal, console or mantel, or incorporated into a collection of medieval-inspired and Grand Tour objects.
