Condition: Antique condition with substantial age-related wear, surface variation, splits, losses and old repairs to the bamboo. A wonderfully unusual antique French bamboo table, dating stylistically to the late 19th or early 20th century and strongly influenced by the Japonisme and Aesthetic Movement taste for exotic natural materials and asymmetrical botanical forms.

The oval top is inset with tightly woven cane, surrounded by concentric bamboo edging that gives the piece a beautifully layered profile. Beneath, an elaborate architectural framework of slender bamboo creates arches, intersecting stretchers and decorative vertical elements, giving the table a surprisingly sculptural presence from every angle.

Particularly charming are the naturally textured branch and bud-like terminals incorporated around the frame. Their irregular organic surfaces contrast with the carefully bent and joined bamboo, giving the piece the eccentric handcrafted quality that makes early bamboo furniture so appealing.
