A wonderful collection of five antique French boules lyonnaises, traditional sporting balls associated with the historic French game of jeu lyonnais, a regional form of boules particularly associated with Lyon and southeastern France.
These distinctive wooden spheres are covered in closely arranged metal nails or studs, a characteristic construction found on historic French sporting boules before modern manufactured balls became widespread. Each has developed its own beautifully weathered surface, with deep iron-grey tones, warm rust, and rich earthy brown patination.
The arrangement of the metal studs varies across the collection, creating subtle differences in texture, pattern, and character. Years of age and use have left the balls with a wonderfully authentic appearance, with areas of wear and missing studs revealing their original construction.
Beyond their sporting heritage, these antique French boules make exceptional decorative objects. Their substantial weight, unusual texture, and strong geometric forms give them an almost sculptural presence, equally at home in traditional country-house interiors and contemporary spaces.
Display them together in an antique wooden dough bowl, arrange them across a library shelf, or incorporate them into a collection of European sporting memorabilia and historical curiosities. Their richly aged surfaces complement natural linen, weathered timber, stone, and other materials commonly found in French provincial and rustic interiors.
An unusual set for collectors of traditional games, French antiques, and decorative objects with a genuine connection to European sporting history.
Please note: These are sold as historical decorative collectibles rather than for active sporting use. Their precise age has not been independently verified.
